Alex Salmond – SNP Candidate for Gordon

Alex Salmond is the Leader of the Scottish National Party and has spent twenty years in public service working for Scotland’s interests and independence.

Alex has been the Member of Parliament for Banff and Buchan since 1987 – representing one of Europe’s most vibrant energy and fishing communities. He was elected as Leader of the SNP in 1990 and campaigned extensively for the return of the Scottish Parliament, which reconvened in 1999 after a 300-year absence.

From 1999-2001, Alex served a dual mandate representing Banff & Buchan both in the UK Parliament and the Scottish Parliament, where he served as Leader of the Official Opposition.
After ten years as National Convener of the SNP, Alex stood down as Leader when the party was at a historic high in the polls, and continued to serve as a Member of Parliament at Westminster. In 2004, he launched his campaign to be Scotland’s next First Minister, standing for SNP Leader again and capturing 75% of the vote.

Since his return to office the SNP have renewed their challenge to Scotland’s ruling  Labour / Liberal Democrat Scottish Executive for political leadership in Scotland and a range of opinion poll surveys tell us Alex Salmond is consistently seen as the people’s choice for next First Minister.

Alex qualified from St Andrew’s University and then entered the Government Economic Service (GES). He then joined the Royal Bank of Scotland, first as an assistant economist, then as an Oil Economist and latterly as Royal Bank Economist.
